Kimberly Hinojosa Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 February 21, 2020 A Hundred Years
Slowly I felt myself waking up. “ A few more minutes is ok...”, I thought to myself, rolling back over. As I began to drift off, I remembered something. School. Panicking, I kicked off my covers and jumped out of bed. “Why didn’t my alarm go off?!” Walking forward I searched for my light switch. Just as I flicked it on a wave of calm, cold fear washed over me. The floor was cold. Now this wouldn’t be considered odd, except for the fact that I have carpet in my room. Glancing down to check why, I noticed my clothing, a gray army styled t-shirt and joggers. My pounding heart beat was in my ears, slowly getting faster. Why? Because of two simple reasons. These were not my clothes... ...and this was not my room. My mind went blank and my vision was fading in and out of darkness. After a few minutes I focused in again. “Breath Shaniel, deep breaths”, I repeated this slowly a few times. Closing my eyes, I took in as deep of a breath I could and released it, opening my eyes once again I looked around. The room was mostly bare, with only a bed and a desk, as well as a suspicious looking camera in a corner. Glaring at it, I went to the desk, hoping there would be clues. Yanking the drawer open I saw it was empty, disappointedly I crouched down. “Maybe there’s something underneath?”, I muttered. As I got under the door swung open. Startled, I hit my head on the desk feeling a stab of pain go through my skull. Silently cursing myself for being jumpy I got out from under and looked. There was anold looking man. The glaring frown on his face and the stiff, intimidating way he stood, all scream tough, bossy army guy. I felt myself shrinking away and immediately stopped myself. After all, how would I figure out where I was if I cowered away? Breathing in, I stood up and looked calmly back at him. I for one refused to be intimidated. Staring him down, I saw a small smirk come over his face. “Shaniel Heart!”, he barked overly loud. Tensed up, I prepared for anything. “W-we need your help”, he finished, deflating like an old balloon and his face appeared exhausted. While I stood there in complete shock. “What! HE the scary looking general guy, who probably runs some top-secret military base, needs my help?!” This thought replayed over and over in my head to the point where I almost missed hearing General Guy saying to follow him. Numbly I did so as we left the room and walked down a long empty hall. After what felt like forever, we stopped at a barred door which he entered a code to. The door unlocked with a loud click and we went inside. As we walked in I looked at my surroundings and froze. The place was as you could imagine, a top-secret military base. There were people everywhere, talking, shouting. Doing what would appear as the typical “We’re trying to save the world” look. General Guy spoke, “As you can see this is a very important organization and in the middle of the crisis that only you can help us with.” “Why me? As far as I know I'm just your average American.” I asked. That’s exactly why we need you, because you’re an average person you should be able to answer our question.” He barked. Jumping, I nodded quickly not wanting him to get angry, then I stopped and said, “Wait that was kind of harsh, I mean I know I said I'm average but you don’t need to say it so- ”. “Enough yapping, now come here Agent 5671!” he intruppted me. Looking around I saw a scrawny guy come up and stutter out, “Y-yes sir!”. “Ask her the question!”, General guy barked at him. “Of course sir!”, he replied quickly then turned to me, “ Shaniel Heart what is Dooms Day Operation 101?” “Umm, I don’t know?“, I answered back hesitantly, “Infact I've never heard of it.” “Gosh darn it she not the one! Agent 5671 send her back to her time immediantly!” Genral Guy yelled, stomping his foot on the ground. “Wait, my time!?”I yelled back loudly. What is he talking about was I time traveled here?! General Guy was already walking away so Agent 5671 answered me, “Yes you are 100 years on the future, but don’t worry you will be transferred back there in T-minus two minutes. We ask that you never speak of this to anyone and that you believe this was a dream.” “Huh? What do you mean? What’s going on? Where is this place?” I rushed to ask him, feeling myself beginning to panic. “We have no time, it was a pleasure to meet you Ms. Heart. Goodbye.” he said curtly. And then everything went black. “Uggg” I groaned. My head was pounding, probably because when everything went black, I had hit my head on the ground. Moving around I felt my soft blanket and one of my many, many pillows. Wait, MY pillows? I opened my eyes and sat up. I was in my room again and the sun was barley shining through my window. “Mooooo-m?” I yelled out. I was an only child and both my parents were early risers so it was normal for us to be up by now. “Yes? What’s up?” she replied coming into my room. “Has anything... Strange happened to you? As in.. I don’t know, time-travel?” I asked causitosly. She smiled in a way that showed me just how much she actually understood what I meant. “So, It finally happened to you too, huh? “, she said knowingly. “If you mean some guy asking me some strange question, and then saying I wasn’t the one and sending me back here, which apparently to them was a hundred years ago, then yeah it did.” I answered her sarcastically. She laughed, “Yep that’s the one, before you freak out too much and scare your dad let me explain what I know.” as she finished saying this she walked over and sat on my bed I nodded my head showing her she could start. “It’s happened for generations in our family, but only to the women, we are taken to that place and asked if we know the answer to a question then, brought back when we don’t.” she started off. “But why us?” I interrupted. “I believe they are trying to find a hero and so far, haven’t found them, or something like that, considering the fact its time travel we can’t be too sure on the details.” she finished off, chuckling. “Yeah I guess that makes sense” I bursted out laughing, “so does that mean we’re side characters?” She laughed as well, “I believe so, now I got pancakes on the table, are you ready to eat?” “Yeah I am” I replied and followed her to the kitchen.
